Booth Review is a new series devoted to top moments from the eyes of radio play-by-play announcer David Shumate

Football

Duke football play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable football moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.

"After beginning the 2018 season 4-0, Duke stumbled in its ACC opener after falling to Virginia Tech – a loss the Blue Devils would have two weeks to stew over with an open date falling between that game and a road trip to Georgia Tech. For most around the ACC, Paul Johnson's triple option attack was nearly impossible to stop – a fear confirmed the previous Friday night when Georgia Tech rolled into Louisville and hung 66 points on the Cardinals, while attempting just two passes, and piling up 547 yards on the ground.

"But Duke had a reason to be optimistic. In its season opener that fall, it had shut down a similar attack by Army in a 34-14 win. Also, a year earlier the Blue Devils held the Yellow Jackets to just 20 points in a 23-point win on senior night in Durham.

"Still stinging from the loss to the Hokies, Duke took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field. Eighty-nine seconds into the game, Deon Jackson's 12-yard rushing touchdown had Duke up 7-0 early on the road. Georgia Tech's lone first half touchdown ironically came through the air, a 32-yard pass from TaQuon Marshall to Malachi Carter late in the second quarter to tie the score just before intermission. It ended up being a first half where Duke's defense held the Yellow Jackets to just 77 yards rushing – a nearly impossible feat. However, with the game tied at the break, the Blue Devils would need even more from their defense in the second half.

"Duke had yet to force a turnover deep into the third period as the game remained knotted at 7-7. With under three minutes left to play in the frame that all changed. Chris Rumph II scooped up a Jerry Howard fumble and four plays later Daniel Jones found T.J. Rahming for a 48-yard strike to break the deadlock. From there, the flood gates poured open. Georgia Tech's quarterback Marshall fumbled on the first play of the Yellow Jackets' ensuing drive, and five plays after that Jones found Davis Koppenhaver from a yard out to make it a 21-7 ballgame with 15 seconds left in the third.

"The Blue Devils weren't finished scoring in that period though. One final kickoff led to yet another Georgia Tech turnover, this time return man Juanyeh Thomas coughed it up inside his own 10-yard line and Jones would make the Yellow Jackets pay. In just over two and a half minutes, Duke turned three turnovers into three touchdowns and a 28-7 lead. The final score finished at 28-14, as the Blue Devils limited one of the top rushing offenses in the country to a little over 200 yards. But it was three turnovers on successive plays that will be the lasting impression of a memorable afternoon on the flats."
