Duke men's basketball play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable hoops moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.

"As the 2018-19 season unfolded, it became increasingly clear there was no stage or spotlight that was too big for RJ Barrett. The top-rated recruit in the 2018 class, and godson of Steve Nash, had spent his whole life around the highest levels of the sport, with his dad Rowan overseeing the Canadian national team after having played professionally for more than a decade.

"Combine this comfort with his incredible skill, and game after game, Barrett delivered. Thirty-three points in first game in a runaway win over Kentucky, 22 points and 9 rebounds in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge against Indiana, and another 16 points under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden in a win over Texas Tech just before Christmas. In 13 of Duke's 18 league games he went for 20 or more points, and in four of those he finished with more than 30.

"When Duke hosted NC State in mid-February, it came on NBA All-Star weekend, and with the NBA's best gathering in Charlotte that year, Cameron Indoor Stadium was packed with the league's best. A captive audience that witnessed just the fourth double-double in school history. Barrett dominated the Wolfpack, pouring in his usual 23 points, while pulling down 11 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists – and doing all of this without a single turnover.

"Duke won the game by 16 – a matchup that three days earlier Coach K wasn't even sure Barrett would be on the court for. Battling illness, the freshman did not practice Wednesday or Thursday and just barely worked out on Friday. Apparently it was all the prep he needed to join Shelden Williams, Gene Banks, and Art Heyman's exclusive club as the only Duke players in history with a triple-double." -- David Shumate
