Duke men's basketball play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable hoops moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.

"When Duke hopped on the bus for the drive to Charlotte and the ACC Tournament in March of 2019 – the Blue Devils did so with more questions than answers about how the next few days would play out. Just three weeks earlier, the Blue Devils were riding high, winners of nine in a row, they were the top team in the country and preparing to host rival North Carolina in easily the most anticipated regular season game of the year. Of course we all know how 30 seconds into that game everything changed.

"It was in so many ways fortunate that Zion Williamson's injury wasn't as serious as perhaps initially feared, but nevertheless, he would miss the rest of the that night and the next five. All told, Duke would lose half of those games and the team that at times seemed invincible now looked remarkably vulnerable.

"As it became clear that No. 1 would be returning for the ACC Tournament, the questions quickly shifted from if he could play to how effective would he be – and could he sustain it through three games in three days to try and win the ACC. As complex as that question may have been, the answer was equally simple. As had become tradition with Zion, he shattered all preconceived notions or predictions of what he could do – not just returning, but shattering one record after another.

"In the quarterfinals against Syracuse he went 13-for-13 from the field, the single-game best shooting performance in Duke history, and the best in the 66-year history of the premier college basketball tournament. The freshman finished the night with 29 points, 14 rebounds, and five steals – as the Blue Devils advanced 84-72. The following night a rematch with the Tar Heels – and Zion delivered again with 31 points and 11 rebounds including the game winning bucket in the final minute as Duke rallied from 13 down to win 74-73.

"He added another 21 points in the championship game against Florida State as Duke won by 10 – bringing Coach K his 15th ACC Title. A clear choice for ACC Tournament MVP, Zion led the team in scoring in each of their three games – in doing so becoming the first freshman in the history of the league to be named Player of the Year and Tournament MVP." -- David Shumate
