Booth Review is a new series devoted to top moments from the eyes of radio play-by-play announcer David Shumate

Football

Duke football play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable football moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.

"In what ended up being his final year in Durham – Daniel Jones turned in one gritty performance after another in the fall of the 2018, but he saved his best outing for the Blue Devils' fiercest rival. Not since the late '80s had a Duke team won three consecutive meetings in the 'Battle for the Victory Bell', but on a sun soaked November afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium, Jones quite literally ran right by the Tar Heels to ring that bell again and again.

"The Blue Devils scored touchdowns on five of their seven drives in the first half – beginning with a 52-yarder from Jones to Chris Taylor, one of two scoring tosses for Jones in the opening quarter. The second came from 26-yards out to tight end Daniel Helm and tied the game at 14-14. Two minutes into the second frame, Jones found his other tight end, Davis Koppenhaver, to give Duke a 21-14 edge. It was the 11th touchdown in Koppenhaver's career, a new Blue Devil milestone that turned out to be merely a footnote in Jones' masterpiece. The redshirt junior's final touchdown of the half came on the ground – a 61-yard scamper with just 16 seconds remaining until intermission. That score gave Duke a 35-28 lead at the break.

"In just 30 minutes, Jones had already racked up 233 yards through the air and another 113 on the ground, while piling up four total touchdowns – and he wasn't finished yet.

"Another 68-yard sprint set up a Quentin Harris rushing touchdown late in the third, a score that proved decisive as Duke won 42-35. Jones finished the day with 547 yards – 361 through the air and a personal best 186 on the ground. His final rushing total set a program record for a quarterback as well.

"While the individual numbers certainly popped off the page, Jones' legacy will likely be written more by how his team faired against North Carolina, as he became the only quarterback in Duke's modern era to start and win three straight in the Battle for the Victory Bell."
