"With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the east coast, Week 3 of college football in the fall of 2018 was feeling the effects. Cancellations were popping up all along over the Carolinas and one program after another was having to drastically alter plans, handle postponements, modify kick times, and in the case of Duke – deal with an earlier departure time than expected.
"The Blue Devils headed into their second consecutive Power 5 road game, this time against Baylor, hoping to make it back-to-back wins after manhandling Northwestern the previous weekend, 21-7. Unfortunately, that win in Evanston, Ill., came at a hefty cost. Standout cornerback Mark Gilbert was lost for the season after a non-contact injury saw him dislocate his hip, while starting quarterback Daniel Jones fractured his collarbone later in the game forcing him to be sidelined for several weeks. Two first team All-ACC caliber players were out, leaving David Cutcliffe and his staff reeling with little time to adjust.
"On a typical road trip, Duke would practice at home on Friday morning and then head to the airport to leave shortly after noon. But with the threat of the incoming storm quickly approaching, the Blue Devils instead left town shortly after dawn on Thursday – leaving half of their weekly preparation to take place once they arrived in Texas.
"With all that adversity, some would anticipate Duke to be somewhat tentative at the outset of a game featuring two 2-0 teams. But the Blue Devils looked anything but that in the first half. They outscored Baylor, 23-0, prior to intermission, holding the Bears to just 148 total yards, while piling up 262 of their own. In his first career start, Quentin Harris finished the day with three touchdown tosses, while Leonard Johnson, starting at safety due to the absence of Gilbert in the secondary, finished the day with a pick-6 in the fourth quarter as Duke rolled to a 40-27 win in Waco. The Blue Devils did not commit a single penalty on the afternoon and when they boarded the plane headed back to Durham they did so as the only team in the country with two Power 5 road wins."
