Berthoud will conduct an inspection of a roundabout on Berthoud Parkway after a citizen raised concerns about pedestrian safety at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting.
The developer of Heron Pointe Apartments is building more residences across the street from the current neighborhood, and as part of the development a crosswalk with a flashing traffic light was installed next to the roundabout on Berthoud Parkway.
During public comment, Heron Pointe Apartments resident Marisol Rodriguez shared a nerve-wracking experience she had at the crosswalk.
Rodriguez said that about two weeks ago she was driving out of her neighborhood at the same time as two young boys on scooters crossing the street at the crosswalk. They crossed the northbound lane safely, but as they were waiting to cross into the southbound lane a woman driving an SUV was heading southbound and didn’t appear to be able to see them at all, Rodriguez said.
“She whipped around that roundabout and I just laid on my horn and she came to an abrupt stop,” Rodriguez said.
“I feel like had I not been there…it would have been incredibly tragic,” she said.
There are a lot of kids in the neighborhood and she said she wanted to raise the issue with the board because she is concerned for their safety.
Town administrator Chris Kirk said that the upgrades to the roundabout were designed by the developer’s traffic engineer and reviewed by the town’s traffic engineer and public works director. The first thing the town would need to do would be to have it inspected again to make sure that it meets proper safety standards.
“If there are sight line issues or there are physical improvements that we can make to improve safety we can do that, but we need to start that process by having a traffic safety engineer do a review of the current constructed improvements to confirm that they were both built to plan and functioning the way they were intended,” he said.
Trustee Jeff Hindman said that he also has concerns about the bike lane on South Taft Avenue that ends at each side of the roundabout and diverts bikes onto the sidewalk. He asked that a review be conducted by someone who was not connected to the initial inspection.
Kirk said that would be easy to arrange, as the town has another engineering firm on staff that was not a part of the process.
Trustee Maureen Dower agreed with Hindman, and added that “if we do find deficiencies, we do need to address it more aggressively.”
