TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Athletics Department's annual Crimson Choice Awards, presented by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), had a different look and feel than it normally does Monday night, taking place on social media instead of the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa as it did last year.
But the honors and celebratory vibe remained the same, with SAAC president Alize Ford (track and field) and Director of Athletics Greg Byrne pairing coat and tie with shorts to open the celebration of Crimson Tide excellence via a pre-recorded video message. The awards were announced on SAAC's Twitter and Instagram accounts (@UA_SAAC) with a video message from CCA co-chairs Sarah Giuliani (rowing) and Lexi Souther (swimming and diving) closing the proceedings.
The CCAs are based on the calendar year with Monday's awards honoring the Crimson Tide's accomplishments from January to December of 2019.
The awards culminated with the announcement of the Paul W. Bryant Award winners - World, NCAA and SEC champion, All-American and SEC Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year Zane Waddell and All-American and Softball Academic All-American of the Year Bailey Hemphill were named.
The Paul W. Bryant Student-Athlete Award, created by the Tuscaloosa County Chapter of the University of Alabama Alumni Association in 1985, is presented annually to UA's top male and female student-athlete. The finalists for this year's Bryant Award were: Alba Cortina Pou (women's tennis), Tyler Gentry (baseball), Herbert Jones (men's basketball), Vincent Kiprop (men's track and field/cross country), Daija Lampkin (women's track and field), Jordan Lewis (women's basketball), Shea Mahoney (gymnastics), Nealy Martin (soccer), Kensey McMahon (women's swimming and diving), Angelica Moresco (women's golf), Edson Ortiz (men's tennis), Ginger Perinar (volleyball), Davis Shore (men's golf), Rebekah Stewart (rowing) and Jedrick Wills (football).
Women's tennis and men's swimming and diving were honored as the teams with the highest grade point averages. Women's tennis earned the honor with a 3.81 team GPA while men's swimming and diving earned the distinction with a 3.58.
The Athletics Department's outreach efforts were also recognized during the event. Crimson Tide student-athletes gave more than 1,750 hours toward community service this year. Baseball was the men's squad with the most community outreach hours while gymnastics earned the honor for the women. The Heart of Service Award, which honors individual efforts in the community, went to Kyle Maas (men's swimming and diving) and Abigail Zembas (rowing).
In its second year, the Unsung Hero Award lauded Alabama student-athletes for making a substantive yet often under-recognized contribution to their team's success in ways that can be difficult to measure. This year's class was comprised of Cade Auerbach (men's swimming), Halia Bower (women's diving), Kyle Cameron (baseball), Shyheim Carter (football), Adam Cottrell (men's basketball), Taylor Drapp (volleyball), Katie Funcheon (women's track), Hunter Jaynes (men's diving), Claire Jenkins (softball), Alonza Klopfer (gymnastics), Angelica Moresco (women's golf), Jacqueline Pelletier (women's tennis), Taylor Pickett (women's field), Thomas Ponder (men's golf), Alex Ramoska (rowing), Destiny Rice (women's basketball), Kat Rogers (soccer), Noel Rotich (men's cross country), Grant Stuckey (men's tennis), Matthew Weaver (men's track), Michael Wiggins (men's field), Eliza Witherspoon (women's cross country) and Cat Wright (women's swimming).
