“The recipe of what makes Pratesi so special is the craftsmanship, the labor involved, and sourcing the finest raw materials,” Klein explains. It became an education of sorts, she says of her team’s deep dive into the Pratesi world following the 2020 acquisition. Box upon box of archival materials was delivered from the heritage brand’s Italian headquarters, and so began the creative process of gleaning the mechanics behind Pratesi’s meticulous handmade production.
“It’s almost putting together a puzzle to make sure we have all the pieces in place to bring back this brand to its glory—and make it even better, we think. If Remigio Pratesi were here, he would be proud,” Klein says.
Though many of the ateliers associated with the label since its founding are no longer extant, the remaining few are left to ply their craft for the next generation of Pratesi consumers. The same box maker, for instance, will create the signature packaging of what Klein describes as “the ceremony” of the Pratesi experience. In areas where new resources are called for, “we are utilizing our network of what we think the best artisans in the industry are,” shares Klein. “It’s created a pretty spectacular supply chain.”
From process to designs, the brand’s next chapter is a delicate weaving of classic and contemporary. Favored embroideries, such as Tre Righe and Treccia, will make a comeback alongside debuting collections Icona and Treccia Moderno—both fresh takes on familiar styles. Icona, for instance, incorporates the iconic “P” monogram with a new elegance, while the latter showcases a chain motif sans the scallop, since “there’s a contemporary client,” Klein says. The designs don Egyptian cotton percale linens, a choice of Angel Luxe or fresh debut Paradiso, which are both fabricated in Italy.
With its newly unveiled direct-to-consumer digital interface and a fresh batch of designs to pair, Pratesi hopes to challenge the age-old conflict: Can relevancy and longevity coexist? Klein says, “We’re taking those subtle adds to make the company relevant today, but also ensuring there’s that timeless piece. Because when you take care of these linens, they can last for a lifetime.”
