Based on Mr. (Tim) Jennings’ outline in (the Jan. 16) Roswell Daily Record regarding his proposed management of COVID-19, I am very disappointed. We are entering our third year in this pandemic, with no indication that the current management protocols provided by people in the science and government communities at both the national and state levels are being supported or observed at the local level. Countless knowledgeable and skillful personnel in health care and with scientific understanding of the issue of pandemic management are being ignored, at best.
We need our local leaders to stand up and rally our citizens to the cause of defeating this common enemy.
With regard to his approach to the conduct of military personnel facing this issue, soldiers have orders that must be obeyed. You begin the day at o’dark-thirty and get in line for your shot! That’s how battles are won. The reasons for mandating healthcare workers’ immunizations should be obvious.
We should review the systems failure that resulted in the great loss of life in the great flu pandemic of 1918-1920. Listen and follow closely the directions of the people who know what it’s all about. Know that what is called “freedom of choice” by some looks like reckless irresponsibility to those who must pick up the burden of caring for those who refuse a simple immunization.
When lives are at stake, public health trumps choice.
