The dust is far from settled in Chad. Ten days after the killing on the battlefield of longtime stringman Idriss Déby, more protests in the capital against the coup that's put Deby's son at the head of a transitional military council. We ask about the deadly crackdown on those banned demonstrations. And the firm condemnation from former colonial power France whose president travelled to N'Djamena last Friday for Deby's funeral and who cannot afford to see anti-French sentiment grow at a time when Chad remains the centerpiece of Paris-led regional efforts to combat jihadist insurgencies.
We are talking about everywhere from Burkina Faso where three European journalists and scores of civilians were killed in separate attacks revealed Tuesday to the southern border near Nigeria where Boko Haram insurgents killed 12 Chadian soldiers.
And that is not counting the precarious truce with rebels who have crossed over from Libya, the same who mortally wounded Idriss Deby. How to secure Chad? Can it be done without another three decades of strongman rule?
