Hickory, N.C.-- The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the fourth annual Bears Choice Awards on Wednesday, April 28th wrapping up the 2020-2021 academic year and honoring and celebrating the hard work and successful seasons of all Lenoir-Rhyne student-athletes.
This was the first in-person BCA's in two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in a year where all 23 sports were running full swing during the spring semester. This was also the first-ever BCA ceremony held outdoors as the event was in Moretz Stadium.
The celebration was kicked off with student-athletes in their best fits on display on the red carpet amongst their teammates and friends followed by an 'Espy'-style ceremony to honor outstanding individual performances and team honors. The awards cover individual, team and special recognitions for the Rufus Moretz Scholar-Athletes and the Wayne B. Powell Award.
The Neill McGeachy's "Stellar" Coaching Excellence Award was awarded to Greg Paradine, Head Coach Men's Lacrosse, for guiding his team to a National No. 3 ranking, 13-1 overall record and sweep of Regular Season SAC Championships and SAC Tournament Championship.
Stephanie Figueiredo, from women's soccer, took home Female Breakthrough Player of the Year, after coming back from an ACL injury she helped lead the Bears to SAC Tournament Championship and finished with 10 points on three goals and four assists. There was a tie for Male Breakthrough Player of the Year for the first time. Liam Waldron, of Men's Golf shared the Male Breakthrough Player of the Year award after leading the Bears with a 72.18 stroke average and becoming the 7th golfer in program history to be named First-team All-Conference. Josh Lanham, from Baseball, was also named Male Breakthrough Player of the Year, after earning Freshman of Year in the SAC and leading the conference with 79 strikeouts while boasting a 6-1 record and a 2.50 ERA to go with a 0.87 WHIP.
The two Newcomer of the Year award winners left a mark this year that couldn't be unnoticed. Emily Harman, Women's Basketball, took home Female Newcomer of the Year after a dominant freshman season which saw her average 14.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists per game and culminated by being named SAC Freshman of the Year. Jacob Wadsworth, Men's Track and Field, won Male Newcomer of the Year showed out in his first year at LR being named an All-American in the Heptathlon and by leading LR to Indoor Nationals for the second time in program history.
The Upset Game of the Year was awarded to Men's Basketball for their win over No. 2 Lincoln Memorial, which saw their 38 game winning streak snapped. The Play of the Year was shared this year for the first time. Cooper Fowler, Men's Basketball, took home Play of the Year with his buzzer-beater over Wingate at home. Noah Tiefel, Men's Soccer, also took home Play of the Year with his spectacular header against Wingate after miraculous touches by Victor Cascon and Benni Gneiser. The Game of the Year was awarded to Baseball for their win over No. 8 Catawba off of Andrew Patrick's no-hitter, which was the first no-hitter in over 24 years.
The Male and Female Athletes of the Year, the highlight of the individual student awards, were given to Eric Dickinson and Ria Acton. Dickison helped lead the Men's Lacrosse team to a 13-1 overall record, a sweep of the Regular Season SAC Championships and SAC Tournament Championships, and was named SAC Player of the Year for the season with 67 points on 38 goals and 29 assists. Acton, an outside back, helped lead the Women's Soccer team to 9-1-1 overall record and SAC Tournament Championship all while leading the Bears and SAC in goals with seven this season.
Also, well-deserved was a new name for an old award. The Supporting Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Amy Wood (Faculty Athletic Rep) and the award is now named in her honor. From here forward, the award will be called the Dr. Amy Wood Supporting Faculty Award.
Wrapping up the show, was the presentation of the Wayne B. Powell Award, which is given to the students who show a strong performance in the classroom and on the field in their sport. This year's recipients were Savannah Moorefield and Myles Moffat.
The show concluded with a firework display over Moretz Stadium.
