I love cheeseburgers. For my last meal, I’d be happy if it was a Culver’s Double Deluxe with everything, a side of cheese curds, and a vanilla shake. I’ve lived in Chicago for more than a decade, but there’s still a part of Wisconsin that lives within me. It’s the one food item I never get sick of having.
When I heard that new White Sox sensation Yermín Mercedes was getting a burger in his honor, naturally, I was intrigued. Having just moved to the Bridgeport neighborhood, I was even more delighted that the eatery serving the “Yerminator Burger” was in my neck of the woods. Located off 31st and South Union streets is Fabulous Freddie’s. Freddie’s is a staple for South Siders, but as the new kid on the block, I wasn’t familiar with the joint. Just looking at their menu, whatever you are craving for, they make it. Even if you want to go into a chill mode, they have an extensive CBD menu.
After watching Mercedes for 4-for-4 against Texas on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, I decided it was time to take the plunge. The single Yerminator Burger is $4.85, which is good value, but, come on. There is nothing small about Yermín Mercedes. So, of course, I made mine a double. Don’t worry about my health. I rode 25 miles on the Peloton burning 1,000 calories in preparation for this culinary tasting.
I’m glad I went for that ride before eating the burger because this is a solid meal without sides. Two beef patties on a garlic bun that’s quite tasty, but the toppings are what make this burger one of the most unique I’ve had. Pickled onions, sweet peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, and a pinkish sauce that I assume is a chimichurri were the toppings.
One bite into the Double Yerminator, and I was surprised how sweet the flavors were. I’ve had a banana and peanut butter on a burger before, but the Yerminator Burger was sweeter than the Elvis-style.
In my second bite, I enjoyed the crunch of cabbage, which was also a burger first for me. Typically I see slaws on pork sandwiches, especially pulled pork varieties. The pickled onions provide a nice tang, and the beef was nicely seasoned. I opted to put mozzarella cheese on mine because I figured it would pair well with the sweet peppers. I recommend that addition for anyone ordering a Yerminator.
After the third bite, it was annihilation time, as I just couldn’t put the Yerminator Burger down. It’s a very different flavor profile from most burgers, and Freddie’s does an excellent job of encompassing the tastes I’ve had visiting islands in the Caribbean. This burger, after all, is a tribute to Mercedes, the stout Dominican who White Sox fans have quickly fallen for thanks to his tremendous start.
If you get the chance while making your way to a White Sox game, I highly recommend stopping at Freddie’s first and getting the Yerminator Burger. It’ll be unlike any other burger you’ve had. Just like Mercedes’ hitting and outgoing personality, it doesn’t disappoint.
