MANSFIELD – Superintendent Teresa Murphy reports that the Mansfield Public Schools will begin participation in the Massachusetts Interdistrict School Choice program.
School Choice allows non-resident students to attend Mansfield Public Schools in selected grades. School Choice brings resources, as well as students, to the district.
The district analyzed student enrollment to determine the grades that would warrant additional student enrollment. For example, last year Mansfield High School graduated 320 students, but next year the district anticipates only approximately 240 students to enter grade 9.
For next fall the district has opened 100 seats between grade 9 and 10. If the number of applications exceeds the number of seats available, then a lottery will be held on Wednesday, April 13.
The district currently has only five students wishing to participate in School Choice for next year. Going forward the School Committee will determine on an annual basis the openings for each upcoming school year, with the determination to be made by May after the Superintendent reviews current and projected enrollment figures and class sizes and presents a recommendation to the School Committee.
School Choice allows parents/guardians to seek options for their teens, and the families who opt-in are very supportive. For example, the families must provide their own transportation from their homes to the Mansfield school. For students who are eligible for special education services, the sending district will reimburse Mansfield for the costs associated with the educational services.
In addition, the sending district reimburses the receiving district for $5,000 per student. In this way, School Choice is a positive revenue program that can offset the declining number of students. It will help the district to continue to provide a wide variety of academic programming along with a plethora of extracurricular, athletic and performing arts opportunities to students.
Questions about the School Choice application process should be directed to the Central Office at 508-261-7500 or refer to the Mansfield Public School’s School Choice webpage.
