George Matysek Jr., a member of the Catholic Review newsroom for more than 24 years, has been named managing editor of Catholic Review Media effective Sept. 27.

Matysek, who most recently served as digital editor of the Catholic Review and the Archdiocese of Baltimore, succeeds Paul McMullen, who retired Sept. 24 after 13 years as managing editor.

A graduate of Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Essex, Matysek holds a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore and a master’s degree from UMBC. He began his tenure at the Catholic Review in 1997 as a staff correspondent and was later named senior correspondent, associate editor and digital editor. He has won more than 100 journalism awards and has reported from Guyana, Guatemala, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary.

“I’ve been blessed to have had tremendous mentors at the Catholic Review,” said Matysek, a parishioner of St. Pius X, Rodgers Forge/St. Mary of the Assumption, Govans. “I learned a great deal from them about producing first-rate journalism and how best to share the many inspiring ways people live out their faith. I’m looking forward to keeping that tradition going strong.”

While McMullen was managing editor, the former Baltimore Sun sports reporter led a news team that was named news organization of the year in 2013, 2018, 2019 and 2020 by the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association.

The Catholic Review also announced that Priscila González de Doran, a native of Mexico, joined the staff in August as a staff writer responsible for producing content in both English and Spanish.

Doran, a parishioner of Our Lady of the Fields in Millersville, earned associate degrees in business administration and information systems, and social and behavioral studies, from Riverside City College in California. She also has a certificate in campus ministry from the Dominican Institute in Oakland.

Catherine Subrizi, a graduate of The John Carroll School in Bel Air and a parishioner of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland, joined the staff Sept. 20 as social media specialist for both Catholic Review Media and the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Subrizi earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore. She previously served at her college alma mater as its social media specialist and senior communications manager. Prior to that, she worked as Notre Dame of Maryland University’s sports information director. She continues serving as the Gators’ assistant volleyball coach.

Christopher Gunty, associate publisher and editor of Catholic Review Media, welcomed the new additions to the staff, while honoring the past.

“Paul McMullen served us very well for 13 years, bringing the stories of the people of God to our readers far and wide,” Gunty said. “We are grateful that George Matysek will step into the role of managing editor, with his 24 years of experience at the Catholic Review and his extensive knowledge of the church in Maryland.”

The new additions to the staff fill roles that have been vacant for a while.

“We are pleased that Priscila and Catherine have joined our team to help communicate the Good News in print, online and in social media,” Gunty said.
