Technical Tidbits 8/13: Coach Choice words for team during practice - From The Rumble Seat

The closer we get to football season, the more and more articles there are about college and professional football. So for today’s Tidbits both articles focus on football. Also, if there’s any particular article you found noteworthy or interesting, (football related or not) feel free to link to it in the comments section.

The title of this article said it all (honestly, it had me thinking about this moment in football history). Cleary, Georgia Tech football running backs coach Tashard Choice has grown tired of Tech’s losing streak and feels it’s time that the team turn things around in head coach Geoff Collins’ third season. Choice had some select words for his team as they were working on 7-on-7 red-zone drills at Bobby Dodd Stadium. As the article mentions, the players weren’t in full-pads — the first full-pads practice was to take place yesterday. Among some of the choice words he mentioned in his motivational talk to the team, “urgency” seemed to be the one that stood out to me.

Going into year three, Collins and his coaching staff must certainly feel the pressure and sense of urgency that they’ve got to start producing better numbers. The transition from the triple-option has been tough, but this season there should be enough of the skilled players the team needs to run its new system — while many of the players are young, there have been some significant additions made through the transfer portal, so inexperience isn’t necessarily an acceptable excuse. For a former player like Choice who played for six seasons in the NFL, competitiveness must come naturally. He emphasized this by mentioning how vigorously NFL pros play even during practice. Playing with a sense of urgency is something that needs to be applied from the top down. And clearly it seems the coaching staff recognizes this.

Preseason and all of its polls, predictions, and rankings (throw watch lists in the mix too) can serve many purposes. They can build up hype for a team and its players. All this certainly works in gaining fan enthusiasm and hence improving attendance. This article focuses on three Georgia Tech football players who on Thursday were named on the official watch list for the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl. The list was released yesterday and the players named are defensive backs Tariq Carpenter and Juanyeh Thomas, and defensive lineman Keion White.

While this does serve to build hype, to me it also says a lot about what could become of the Yellow Jackets defense this season. The fact that three players are on the list does speak to the talent on that side of the ball. While there’s naturally a lot of focus on Tech’s offense as it transitions to a pro-based system, there should also be some attention paid to its defense. After all, head coach Geoff Collins could be considered a more defensive minded coach. While we all hope to see the offense improve this year, my expectations are a little higher for the defense and what it can do to prove itself this season.
