Kiszla vs. O’Halloran: Is Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater the better choice as Broncos starting quarterback? - The Denver Post

Kiz: OK, let’s stop messing around. This training camp battle has been mildly entertaining, but it’s time for the Broncos to name a starting quarterback. Is Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater the smarter choice for a team that has missed the playoffs for five consecutive years? I’ve watched two exhibition games, read the tea leaves and talked to coach Vic Fangio about his decision-making process. I have a strong opinion on what the Broncos should do, but honestly have no solid clue on what Fangio will do. What say you?

O’Halloran: All we can do is read the proverbial tea leaves because Vic has been adamant about saying there hasn’t been separation between Lock and Bridgewater. It probably makes sense to have that public stance because it doesn’t invite all kinds of questions and speculation. Fangio has to be thrilled the quarterback competition has been this spirited instead of having to make a by-default decision. My lean from the day the Broncos acquired Bridgewater from Carolina has been the Week 1 job was his to lose and in the two games, he has done nothing to prove he shouldn’t be the choice.

Kiz: The veteran savvy of Bridgewater does give the Broncos a better chance to win the season opener on the road against the Giants. And if the Broncos don’t win that game, I cannot imagine any realistic scenario that ends with Denver in the playoffs. So while that’s a huge motivation to name Bridgewater the starter, I view Teddy as a Band-Aid. He’s a short-term solution, at best. And he’s unlikely to lead this team to more than nine victories. That’s no way to run a football team, if you ask me.

O’Halloran: Fangio has to balance the short- and long-term ramifications, but as a coach on the hot seat, the short-term is more important. The game against the Giants is the biggest of his head-coaching life (remember, he’s 0-for-September with the Broncos) so his mindset should entirely be short-term — choose the quarterback who gives them the best chance to be 1-0. Right now, that’s Teddy. Run the football. Use play action. Take some intermediate-to-deep shots. And get out of the Meadowlands with a 23-14 win. Neither quarterback has presented any evidence they can lead the Broncos to 10 wins.

Kiz: Unlike Fangio, my future as coach of the Broncos does not depend on this decision. So I readily confess to favoring Lock as the starter because I think he brings far more entertainment value to the Denver huddle. He’s more unpredictable and spectacular (in either success or failure). Maybe that’s no way to run a football team, either. So let me offer a better reason for rolling the dice with Lock. The lone way I see the Broncos producing double-digit victories in 2021 is if Lock takes a big leap and surprises us all by becoming a top-tier QB in this league.

O’Halloran: Lock has been better in the preseason games than training camp practices, which is a sign of how elite the Broncos’ defense might be. And I agree — his arm strength and mobility would help the offense create more explosive plays. I’ve been adamant that Lock should be the Week 1 starter for that reason — he can stress a defense more than Bridgewater. But ultimately, Lock can also stress his own team with turnovers and missed throws and that’s why I’ll be surprised if Vic doesn’t start the season with Teddy.
