Choice Home Warranty at a Glance
Choice Home Warranty offers home warranty plans that cover an array of essential home appliances and systems. Unlike homeowner’s insurance, which can cover items damaged from theft, fires and natural disasters, home warranties cover items that fail or break at some point in their life from normal wear and tear.
For homeowners with more complex (and expensive) appliances and home systems, like plumbing and air conditioning, it’s a great idea to purchase a home warranty plan to avoid unexpected and possibly even life-changing costs for necessary repairs or replacements in the future.
Choice Home Warranty is a great affordable option, offering a Basic and Total plan to cover a variety of essential home appliances and systems. The Basic plan covers a handful of appliances and items, while the Total plan offers more coverage at a higher price.
Choice customers also have the option to add on coverage services for items that aren’t included in their plan. While customers cannot fully customize each plan, having these add-on options provides a small level of customization for those who need a little extra coverage for things like pools and second refrigerators.
If you find yourself in an emergency situation, like having a faulty air conditioning system in the middle of a devastating heat wave, Choice technicians may expedite the process. Plus, customer service representatives are available to assist you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Available Plans
Choice Home Warranty offers two plans: Total and Basic. The company’s Basic plan offers coverage for essential household items and systems, like heating systems and dishwashers.
The Total plan offers a more comprehensive coverage plan. While it is the more expensive of the two plans, it protects significantly more items and systems, which could save you money in the long run. The Total plan covers everything the Basic plan covers with the addition of coverage for an air conditioning system, clothes washer, clothes dryer and refrigerator.
Other Benefits
For an additional fee, Choice Home Warranty customers can spring for optional add ons to cover items or systems that aren’t covered by their base plan.
Add-on coverage options include:
- Pool / Spa
- Central Vacuum
- Second Refrigerator
- Well Pump
- Limited Roof Leak
- Stand Alone Freezer
- Sump Pump
- Septic System
- Septic Tank Pumping
There are also some discounts that come with joining the Choice Home Warranty family. It offers $30 off plus a free month of coverage when you purchase a full year of service. Choice also runs seasonal and holiday promotions that offer significant savings, so check their prices regularly or call a customer service representative before purchasing your plan to see if you can snag a deal.
Fine Print
Choice Home Warranty is unfortunately not available nationwide. They don’t offer coverage in Washington state or California, so consider other home warranty providers if you live in either of those two states.
Because Choice Home Warranty offers two base plans, their coverage isn’t fully customizable. If you have a specific set of coverage needs that aren’t completely covered by Choice’s plans and add-on options, you will have to look elsewhere to find the right plan for you. Similarly, if you live in a tiny home without many of these systems or appliances, you will end up paying for a plan with a lot of unnecessary coverage if you go with Choice.
Plan Pricing
The cost of your Choice Home Warranty plan will depend on the size of your home, which plan you choose and whether or not you add optional coverage. Choice charges between $46 and $69 per month for the Basic plan and between $62 and $85 per month for the Total plan, not including add-ons. Add-ons can add an extra $45 to $180 per year.
Choice also charges a service fee to all policyholders who call for a technician to come to their home for an inspection or repair. Policyholders can expect to pay an $85 trade service call fee per claim, regardless of the cost of the repair or replacement for the covered item. That fee is on par with what other home warranty companies charge and isn’t unique to Choice. Service fees are standard in the home warranty industry.
Payout Limitations
As with any home warranty provider, expect payout limitations when you purchase a plan from Choice Home Warranty. It excludes items with pre-existing conditions, like heavy damage, from coverage. If you have old appliances or home systems, be sure to purchase coverage before they fail or become damaged. Choice does not deny coverage for items based on their age.
Choice does not cover cosmetic items that aren’t necessary for the item’s functionality. Items that aren’t covered are:
- Cosmetic items (doors, handles, etc.)
- Sediment build-up in water heater tanks
- Water reservoir tanks
Choice also doesn’t cover damage that was caused by an uncontrollable event, also known as an act of God. Such events include burglaries and theft, house fires, earthquakes and severe weather.
Consider springing for homeowner’s insurance to cover your belongings if you’re concerned about acts of God. For the ultimate peace of mind, we recommend getting both homeowner’s insurance and a home warranty. That way, there’s an excellent chance that your home’s items and systems will be covered in any damaging event.
Choice Home Warranty has caps for all of its coverage offers. The company states in their sample agreement that its liability will not exceed $3,000 per item for access, diagnosis, repair or replacement. So, if your dishwasher breaks and it costs $3,500 to replace it, you’ll be responsible for paying that extra $500.
