Emily Muhlenhaupt continued her reign on the uneven bars and put herself firmly in the conversation as one of the best gymnasts in Boise State history. For the second consecutive year, Muhlenhaupt was named to the All-America First Team on bars. She is the first Bronco gymnast to earn multiple first-team All-America honors since Julie Wagner garnered the accolades in 1993 (vault and all-around) and 1995 (bars), and is only the second two-time first-team All-American in program history.
At the conference level, Muhlenhaupt repeated as the MRGC Bars Specialist of the Year after winning the 2021 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference title on the apparatus. She is now a three-time All-MRGC First Team honoree and a 15-time MRGC Bars Specialist of the Week, yet she still has more to prove.
Muhlenhaupt will take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted to student-athletes impacted by the pandemic and return for another season in the Blue and Orange next year as a super senior. Among her unfinished business is the pursuit of a perfect 10. Muhlenhaupt has achieved a career-best 9.975 on bars four times.
Clare O'Brien wrapped up her Boise State career with multiple first-team All-America honors on the outdoor track in 2021. O'Brien finished sixth in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA National Championships, and two days later turned in an eighth-place finish in the 5,000 meters.
The Queensland, Australia, native earned five All-America honors during her illustrious career with the Broncos, in addition to eight All-Mountain West accolades. O'Brien took third place at the 2021 Mountain West Championships in the 10,000 meters. Earlier in the season, she lowered her personal best time in the 10,000 to reclaim the third-fastest mark in program history.
All of O'Brien's achievements during the 2020-21 season came after thinking her collegiate career may have come to an end. While recovering from injury during the spring of 2020, what could have been her final season was halted by the pandemic. Instead of watching from the sideline, O'Brien had the opportunity to use her last year of eligibility in the spring of 2021. Her continued training paid off with the best outdoor season of her career and a spot among Boise State's all-time greats as a Female Athlete of the Year.
