AMHERST — With no legislative approval for ranked choice voting — and the municipal election a little more than three months from now — this methodology to calculate results will not be used in town on Nov. 2.

“There is no new legislation as of July 1st, the date established, so there is no plan to implement ranked-choice voting for the November election,” Amherst Town Manager Paul Bockelman said in his most recent report to the council this month.

But this outcome is not due to lack of effort, he wrote, saying: “The Town’s Ranked Choice Voting legislation had a public hearing at the State House on June 23rd. The Chair of the Ranked-Choice Committee and Town Councilors provided testimony.”

Town Councilor, Jones Library Trustee, School Committee, Housing Authority, and Oliver Smith Will Elector offices will appear on the ballot.

Sept. 14 is deadline to submit nomination papers to the town clerk’s office. The last day to register to vote for the upcoming election is Oct. 13.

The new town charter that took effect in 2018 required establishment of a ranked choice voting commission.
