Re “Should San Diego consider building public housing?” (July 18): I grew up in public housing in New York City and have worked for public housing in my career. It serves a vital purpose; affordable, clean living.
My “project” housed more than 10,000 people. It allowed for working families to enjoy a well-maintained abode and surroundings.
There were playgrounds and other amenities and I never experienced vermin as is common in low-rent housing. Families that eventually climbed the economic ladder moved on.
When I worked for public housing for a city in Massachusetts, several of the “projects” were dedicated to senior housing, allowing that population, who are often on a fixed income, clean, affordable homes.
When there is a housing shortage and sky-high rents and home prices, public housing is needed more than ever.

The U-T welcomes and encourages community dialogue on important public matters.
That is the very best solution that I have heard in years. Why couldn’t our politicians have thought of that? That also cuts out two to six people/companies getting a portion of the sale price (i.e., commissions), thus reducing the cost right there.
Government housing should be no frills but would provide many more houses at much lower prices.
San Diego could come much closer to meeting its objective of getting more roofs over many more people’s heads.
