WOODSFIELD — Monroe County commissioners reviewed more than a dozen projects that could receive funding through the Appalachian Regional Commission to help improve various aspects of the county.
Mellisa Zoller, interim development director of Buckeye Hills Regional Council, provided a list of 14 projects that were submitted to the council for potential funding. She said not all the projects would take place in the county but they all involve the county. The projects include water, wastewater, theater, education and tourism improvements, she said.
“That’s the beauty of ARC — it includes so many things, it’s not just tied to just one project,” she said.
Some of the projects include hydrant replacements in Woodsfield, the Monroe County shared fuel facility, Ohio 7 water main relocation, Powhatan No. 7 railroad track alignment, interior improvements to the Monroe Theatre, and the Ohio & Lee sanitary sewer system.
“Most of these projects are good projects,” she said.
Each project must have a 25 percent local match to be eligible for ARC funding. She said they have been encouraged to select large investment projects for submission.
Buckeye Hills will review each of the projects and make a final decision for submission in August with funding being awarded sometime next year.
Zoller said although every project may not be selected for the ARC funding due to it not meeting all the requirements, the group is happy to receive them all.
She said officials may be able to direct a project to an alternate source where it would be eligible, such as through Community Development Block Grant funding.
In other news, Mary Jo Westfall, Monroe County Ohio State University Extension Office associate, gave Commissioners Mick Schumacher, Diane Burkhart and Bill Bolon her recommendations for two CDBG funded projects.
The first project is for 14 fire hydrant replacements in Woodsfield. She recommended the low bid that was received of $222,405 from Border Patrol LLC of Hopedale.
The second project is for sidewalk replacements in Beallsville. Only one contractor submitted a bid, she said — Stouffer’s Construction of Barnesville for $37,325.
Commissioners unanimously approved the recommendations for the two projects.
