NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The city Board of Elections has come under intense scrutiny following last month’s primary.
At a state Assembly hearing, frustrated lawmakers say they dropped the ball when it came to rolling out ranked choice voting.

“The problem with June’s primary, it was not ranked choice voting. It was the incompetency of the Board of Elections,” said Assembly member Robert Carole.
Lawmakers and community groups turned out at the New York City College of Technology for an Assembly hearing on ranked choice. Supporters say the city could have done more.
“I know there has been criticism by some that there was not enough education, that this happened too quickly. Not true at all,” said Kate Doran of the League of Women Voters.

The city’s Board of Elections drew harsh criticism when it released the initial round of ranked choice results, but included thousands of test votes it failed to remove from the system.
The committee is seeking recommendations from elected officials, advocates, and other stakeholders.
“On what more needs to be done legislatively, or fiscally, or otherwise to ensure that our state is doing all that we can to ensure that New York state voters have access to full, fair and successful elections,” said Assembly member Latrice Walker.
The city will use ranked choice voting for the November elections for mayor, public advocate, and other offices.
