The Youngstown State men's golf team competed in six tournaments across five different states during the 2020-21 season. YSU participated in tournaments in Nevada, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.
The Penguins earned a second-place finish at the Battle at Rum Pointe while posting two additional top-five finishes. Individually, Kevin Scherr was named Second-Team All-Horizon League and Bryan Kordupel was selected to the Horizon League All-Academic Team.
Team and individual highlights from the season are detailed below.
Second-Place Finish at the Battle at Rum Pointe
- Bryan Kordupel and Kevin Scherr each finished in the top five to lead Youngstown State to a second-place finish in the Battle at Rum Pointe on March 27-28 at Rum Pointe Seaside Golf Links in Berlin, Md.
- Kordupel recorded a two-round score of 144 (71-73) to tie for third place and finish one stroke back of the winning score while Scherr fired a two-round 145 (72-73) to place fifth. In addition, Cole Christman tied for 13th with a two-round 148 (76-72).
- The Penguins posted a team score of 296 in the first round to sit in third place after day one of the tournament. YSU recorded a 295 in the second and final round to move in front of Lafayette for the second-place finish with a two-round 591. The Penguins' two-round team score of 591 is tied for the eighth-lowest 36-hole mark in program history.
- Youngstown State finished three strokes behind Bucknell, which carded rounds of 287 and 301 for a two-round 588. The Guins were nine strokes back of the Bison after Saturday's first round.
Two More Top-Five Finishes
- YSU earned two additional top-five finishes during the 2020-21 campaign. The Penguins placed fifth in the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate and fifth in the Wright State Invitational.
- Ken Keller and Bryan Kordupel each earned a top-15 finish to lead Youngstown State to a fifth-place finish on April 12-13 in the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.
- The Penguins fired a season-low round of 277 (-3) in the final session to shoot up four spots on the team leaderboard. YSU's final-round 277 ranks as the third-lowest 18-hole team score in program history. It is the Penguins' lowest round since carding a 275 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in 2015-16.
- YSU posted scores of 296 and 283 in the first two rounds to finish with a three-round team total of 856. The performance ranks as the fourth-lowest 54-hole team score in school history. It was the Penguins' lowest 54-hole performance since recording an 854 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in 2015-16.
- Keller carded a career-best three-round score of 209 (74-68-67) to finish tied for sixth at one under par. The senior's three-round 209 is tied for the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Keller's final-round 67 (-3), which matched the lowest round of his career, is tied for the 10th-lowest round in school history.
- Kordupel recorded a career-best three-round total of 212 (74-72-66) to finish tied for 12th at two over par. The junior fired a career-low round of 66 (-4) in the final round to climb from 37th to 12th. The junior's final-round 66 is tied for the seventh-lowest 18-hole score in school history. Kordupel is one of only two Penguins since 2015 to record a round of 66 or below.
- Kevin Scherr tied for third place to lead Youngstown State to a fifth-place finish in the Wright State Invitational on April 18-19 at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro, Ohio.
- Scherr finished the event with a season-best three-round score of 212 (67-74-71). The senior's first-round 67 (-4), which marked his low round of the season, is tied for the 10th-lowest round in school history. Scherr finished two strokes back of the winning score. In addition, Cole Christman tied for 14th with a three-round 223 (73-74-76).
Scherr Named Second-Team All-Horizon League
- Senior Kevin Scherr was named Second-Team All-Horizon League after another strong season in 2020-21.
- Scherr earned All-Horizon League honors for the second time in his career; he was a first-team all-league honoree as a sophomore in 2018-19. He became the fourth player in program history to earn All-Horizon League accolades multiple times. He joins Nate Komsa (2004, 2006), Ryan Stocke (2007, 2008, 2010) and Brandon Pluchinsky (2015, 2016). The Penguins have now had a player earn all-league honors in six of the last eight seasons that postseason awards have been handed out.
- Scherr competed in five tournaments and 14 rounds this past season with a team-best 74.3 strokes-per-round average and a low round of 67. He earned two top-five finishes and was YSU's top finisher on two occasions. The Nazareth, Pa., native tied for third place at the Wright State Invitational with a three-round score of 212 (67-74-71). He finished fifth at the Battle at Rum Pointe with a career-best two-round total of 145 (72-73). Scherr also tied for 31st to lead YSU at the Jackrabbit Invitational with a three-round score of 225 (75-72-78).
- Scherr's 74.3 strokes-per-round average is tied for the ninth-lowest lowest mark in program history. He now owns three of the 10 lowest single-season scoring averages in school history. The senior's 74.8 career scoring average currently ranks tied for second in program history. He has competed in 34 of the 35 tournaments that YSU has played since he joined the program in 2017-18.
Kordupel Named to Horizon League All-Academic Team
- Junior Bryan Kordupel was named to the 2021 Horizon League Men's Golf All-Academic Team for his combined success in the classroom and in competition.
- Kordupel became the first Penguin to earn Horizon League All-Academic honors since Steven Sveda in 2017. He currently holds a cumulative 4.00 GPA as an engineering major at YSU. He has been named to Youngstown State's President's List in each of his six semesters. He is also a three-time member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll.
- The Boardman, Ohio native competed in all six of the Penguins' tournaments during the 2020-21 season. He ranked second on the team with a career-best 75.0 strokes-per-round average. Kordupel's 75.0 strokes-per-round average ranks 15th on the YSU single-season chart. The junior earned two top-five finishes and three in the top 15 while being YSU's top finisher on a team-best three occasions.
- Kordupel tied for third place with a two-round score of 144 (71-73) to lead the Penguins to a second-place finish at the Battle at Rum Pointe on March 27-28. He placed fifth at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational on April 2-3 with a two-round total of 146 (72-74). Kordupel tied for 12th at the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate on April 12-13 with a three-round score of 212 (74-72-66). His final-round 66 (-4) was the lowest round recorded by a YSU golfer in 2020-21. The performance is also tied for the seventh-lowest round in program history.
- Kordupel's 76.7 career scoring average currently ranks as the 13th-lowest mark in program history.
Another Strong Season for Keller
- Senior Ken Keller put together another strong season in 2020-21. The Youngstown, Ohio, native competed in five tournaments and 14 rounds with a 75.1 strokes-per-round average and a low round of 67. Keller's 75.1 strokes-per-round average is tied for 16th on the YSU single-season chart.
- Keller tied for sixth at the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate with a career-best three-round total of 209 (74-68-67). The senior's three-round 209 is tied for the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Keller's final-round 67 (-3), which matched the lowest round of his career, is tied for the 10th-lowest round in school history.
- Keller also tied for 18th to lead the Penguins at the 2021 Horizon League Championships. The senior posted a three-round score of 227 (73-79-75) to earn his second top-20 finish at the league championships.
- Keller's 76.1 career scoring average currently ranks as the ninth-lowest mark in program history. He has competed in 34 of the 35 tournaments that YSU has played since he joined the program in 2017-18.
Consistency from Christman
- After a strong freshman season in 2019-20, sophomore Cole Christman was a fixture in YSU's lineup once again in 2020-21.
- The Boardman, Ohio, native was one of two Penguins to compete in all six tournaments and 16 rounds. He earned three top-25 finishes, averaged a career-best 76.2 strokes per round and posted a low round of 69.
- Christman tied for 13th at the Battle at Rum Pointe with a two-round score of 148 (76-72). He tied for 22nd at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational with a two-round 155 (77-78). Christman also tied for 14th at the Wright State Invitational with a three-round score of 223 (73-74-76).
Depth on Display
Hughes, Stark Conclude Careers
- Seniors C.J. Hughes and Justin Stark each concluded their YSU careers following the 2020-21 campaign.
- Hughes finished his career having competed in 30 tournaments and 81 rounds over four seasons. His 77.3 career scoring average is tied for 19th on the YSU all-time list. Hughes' best finish of 2020-21 came when he tied for 26th at the Horizon League Championships with a three-round score of 233 (80-76-77).
- Hughes participated in all 11 tournaments and 30 rounds as a freshman in 2017-18 and as a sophomore in 2018-19. The best finish of his career came when he placed third with a three-round 220 (75-74-71) at the Titans Motown Collegiate in 2017-18. Hughes posted a career-low round of 67 (-5) at the Fuzzy Zoeller Intercollegiate in 2018-19.
- After redshirting in 2016-17, Stark went on to compete in 10 tournaments and 26 rounds over four seasons. He averaged a career-best 77.1 strokes per round and recorded a career-low round of 72 during the shortened 2019-20 season. The best finish of his career came in 2017-18 when he placed 31st at the Titans Motown Collegiate with a three-round 239 (79-78-82).
