Will Kulp: Mandates do disrupt personal choice - Greeley Tribune

I read, with interest, Dr. Kahn’s letter printed in your Nov. 27 issue.

It would be hard to overstate the respect and admiration that his life story, his life’s work, his humanitarianism and his intellect engender within me. But I would like to take public issue with his statement made in paragraph 8 of his letter.

Dr. Kahn said, in that paragraph, that “individual choice is not destroyed by these measures … “, referring, I believe, to the governmental mandates aimed at relieving the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. By definition a mandate takes away choices with respect to whatever is mandated.

And here we come to the nub of the problem that bedevils our society today: One side takes the mantra, in effect, ” Health care above all else” while the other side’s mantra is “Freedom above all else”.

How to meld and mesh these two approaches is our existential problem.

I tend to position myself toward the ‘freedom;’ side of the spectrum. I say that because of the two — health care and freedom — only the concept of freedom is ingrained in the American psyche.

The better approach to dealing with the pandemic on a national level, I think, would have the authorities educate and advise the public regarding best practices, protocols and safety measures one could or should take for one’s self and family. This places responsibility where it really belongs — upon the individual.

Because I tend to the ‘freedom’ side of the equation I would say it is government’s role is to advise and it is our role to make wise choices.
