Such a risky call is the topic of “What is Left, Burns,” a brief but highly intriguing little play from James Ijames that was designed to be viewed online and that kicks off the new virtual season at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. This show, which has a cool, stylish veneer and lasts just 20 minutes, is a video conversation between Keith (K. Todd Freeman), a college English professor now approaching retirement age, and Ronnie (Jon Michael Hill), his former student, mentee and lover of some 15 years prior.
