Tracee Ellis Ross, Tiffany Haddish, Ellen Pompeo and other winners also gave speeches filled with messages of hope and positivity during Sunday's show.
Tyler Perry, Jennifer Lopez and more winners of the 2020 E! People's Choice Awards shared messages of inspiration and positivity amid a year that has been dominated by the pandemic and on the heels of a contentious presidential election that took days to call.
Demi Lovato hosted the show, which aired live from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. In lieu of a live audience, Lovato walked out onstage surrounded by video screens of people watching at home. She called them "superfans from all over the country" who were part of the VIP section: "Virtual in Person." These fans also are helping to present the awards by revealing the winner's names.
She also noted that the awards are voted on by the fans and joked, in a reference to the recent presidential election: "Don't worry, we made sure to count every vote in Pennsylvania first." Joking about the pandemic, she added that "this year has been the longest three years of my life."
The first winner to be revealed was Tiffany Haddish, who was named female movie star of 2020 for her performance in Like a Boss, while other early winners included Mandy Moore (drama TV star of the year for This Is Us) and Blake Shelton (country artist of 2020).
Haddish noted the importance of loving one's self — "I like me and that's what I'm rolling with; if you love me, fantastic" — and then gave a "shoutout to anyone going through depression or stress this year" along with "all the people in Africa struggling this year."
Moore and Shelton gave shoutouts to their significant others: Moore to husband Taylor Goldsmith and the baby boy they are expecting and Shelton to his "new fiancee" Gwen Stefani. Moore also encouraged people to practice social distancing and "be kind to one another."
Meanwhile, The Ellen DeGeneres Show was named best daytime talk show despite recent controversy over the workplace culture, including accusations of racism, intimidation, unjust termination and an overall toxic work culture that has allegedly been perpetuated by the show's top producers.
DeGeneres accepted the award, first joking that she wasn't sure where to look when giving her speech — the screens onstage or the cameras. Settling on the latter, and addressing the viewers at home, DeGeneres said she accepted the award "not only for myself but on behalf of my amazing crew and staff who make this show possible. They show up every single day and give 100 percent of themselves, 100 percent of the time. I love them all and I thank them for what they do every single day. … Thank you to the people and fans for supporting me and sticking by me. I cannot tell you how grateful I am and how much it means to me."
Sofía Vergara won best comedy TV star for Modern Family. She noted that the win was bittersweet since it's the last award she is eligible to win for the show, which ended its 11-season run earlier this year. She also encouraged people to continue wearing masks amid the pandemic "even though it's hot."
Ellen Pompeo was named female TV star of the year for Grey's Anatomy, sharing a message of positivity in her speech.
"Our show is about love and acceptance, and winning this award is confirmation that people respond to those ideas," she said. "They respond to the idea of love, they respond to the idea of acceptance, they respond to the idea of us pulling one another up. ... 2020 has tested that time and time again and also proven that when we do that, when we look out for each other, when we pull each other up, anything is possible. So let's kick the rest of 2020's ass. Let's look out for each other, be responsible for each other, and love."
In addition, Jennifer Lopez was honored with the People’s Icon Award, Tyler Perry accepted the People’s Champion of 2020 Award, and Tracee Ellis Ross was presented with the Fashion Icon Award.
Armie Hammer introduced Lopez, his co-star in the upcoming film Shotgun Wedding. "She leads with compassion … and her joy for life is contagious," he said, noting that despite her success, she's still "Jenny from the block."
Stars including Renee Zellweger and Nicole Kidman, along with Lopez's twins, also sent in congratulatory messages via video.
For her part, Lopez gave an inspiring speech that first addressed what a wake-up call 2020 has been. "This year was a great leveler," she said. "It showed us what mattered and what didn't, and for me it reinforced what matters the most: people. All of us. Together. Helping each other. Loving each other. Being kind to each other. And the importance of that connection, the human touch, and I realize it's what I strive for in everything I do — to reach people, to touch people. I believe it's what we all want, those shared experiences to know we are not alone.
She noted how hard it's been to get where she is now and hopes she can be an inspiration to girls all over the world. "As a Latina and woman, you have to work twice as hard to get the same opportunities," she said. "My dreams and ambition made people nervous. … The more they said I couldn't achieve them, the more I knew that I had to. … The true measure of success is not in box office numbers or in records sold. It's in inspiring girls of all ages and all colors all over the world that you can do whatever you want. … Your dreams are limited only by your imagination and determination and willingness to never give up."
Tiffany Haddish presented Perry with the People’s Champion of 2020 Award. "He's the type of person who wants to do something nice for you because you are you," she said. "He sees people and wants to make their lives better because he's been there." She noted that he kept all his employees on his payroll amid the pandemic. "He knows that giving someone a little chance can have a ripple effect on an entire community," she added.
Perry told a story of how he paid someone to do some work at his house. The gist was that he was paying someone to dig to find water and despite all their efforts, they kept coming up empty-handed. Right when it seemed hopeless, they dug four more inches and found water. He hoped viewers took inspiration from that story to never give up on their dreams.
"If you just keep digging, my god, if you could just hear me right now, just keep digging, you may be four inches away from every gift and every blessing that you've wanted in your life," he said, adding: "You are worthy of getting to your goal. Keep digging. Don't stop. … And when you get there, make sure everybody you there meets you at your worth."
Tyler, the Creator introduced Ross. "She bleeds confidence, and her imagination knows no bounds," he said. "She's gorgeous as hell, she's smart as hell, she's confident and bold, and she has this freedom that is very rare to come by."
In her speech, Ross noted that fashion can and should be used to make statements. "I wear my insides on the outside," she said, pointing to such examples as when she wore only Black designers while hosting the American Music Awards in 2018 and when Golden Globes fashion went all black in support of #MeToo and Time's Up moments that same year.
"If fashion is a thing that draws you in, then use it as a tool for transformation," she said. "Let your clothes be your superhero cape. Let fashion be your joy and commitment to the word you want to see. It doesn't matter if you wear a black tie or a Black Lives Matter t-shirt. Suit up and speak up."
Performers during the People's Choice Awards included Justin Bieber, who sang "Lonely" and "Holy," and Chloe x Halle with "Ungodly Hour."
The show also paid tribute to local, real-life heroes around the country (the "People's Heroes of 2020"), spotlighting them with short video clips.
