Decision 2020: volunteering for the campaign of your choice - WVVA TV

(WVVA) - The clock is ticking down until Election Day, which is coming up on Tues. Nov. 3. There's still time to get involved for those willing to do something to help the candidates of their choice, and this includes more than writing a check or bickering online.

Political arguments on social media seem to be everywhere you scroll.

"I am 68-years-old now, and I have never seen such negative behavior," said Skip Crane.

However, negative political attacks online hasn't stopped Crane from getting involved this election. He's a volunteer with the Mercer County Democratic Party.

"One of my favorite things, addressing post cards, putting stamps, taking them to the post office, visiting, fellowship, talking about positive things," said Crane.

"What we need are people who are door droppers, we do what we called 'lit drops.' We drop literature at peoples' doors. We don't knock and talk to people anymore. That's kind of dicey. We leave a piece of literature on their door and leave," said Deb McCarthy, a member of the Mercer County Democratic Executive Committee.

If you'd like to get involved this election season, you can come to Mercer St. in Princeton. Here, you'll find both the Republican and Democratic Headquarters for Mercer County.

Over at the Republican Headquarters, voters can stop by, meet candidates, volunteer to call voters and pick up visual signs to show support for their candidates.

"I've had a lot of people reach out through our Facebook page wanting signs, and I'm taking that as a plus that if they're wanting some signs, they're going to vote Republican," said Brenda Miller-Mann, chair of the Mercer County Republican Committee.

That's exactly what Ron Thompson is going to do. Four years ago, he switched from a registered Democrat to a Republican. He says it was a "common sense" decision.

"Well the second amendment rights….and we can't give up, have open borders that's ridiculous. We experienced a bunch of that and it didn't work well," said Thompson.

Now, Thompson spends his time volunteering and encouraging others to join his party and vote. At the Democratic Headquarters, volunteers are also pushing for people to head to the polls this November.

"I think it's important for everyone to realize you do have a voice and the most political thing you can do is vote," said Sophie Klein, a volunteer with the Mercer County Democratic Party.

"We basically have a choice about whether we're going to remain the United States of America or if we are going to be the divided states of America, and democracy works on compromise," said Doris Irwin, the Democratic Chair for Mercer County.

If you're not a registered Republican or Democrat in West Virginia, you can also get involved with the Libertarian Party, and it all starts with sending them a message on Facebook.

"You can do anything that you have the time to do whether it's in today's environment, people are not keen on face to face contact, putting door hangers on peoples' doors, if you are comfortable getting out in the public, you can host meet and greets," said David Valente, the Chair of the Libertarian Party of West Virginia.

Valente says there are 8,000 registered Libertarians in West Virginia. WVVA also spoke with Democratic and Republican leaders in Tazewell County about how you can get involved in Virginia. One way is to volunteer and drive people to the polls.

"Vote early. We will come get you and give you a ride to the poll. if you have trouble getting from the car into the poll, the Tazewell County Registrar, who is a very straight up person, will arrange to have the machine brought out to the car and you can vote sitting in your car," said Bill Bunch, the Vice Chair of the Democratic Committee of Tazewell County.

If you want to vote early in Virginia or West Virginia, you have about two weeks left. Early voting ends on Sat. Oct. 31 for both states.

WVVA also spoke with with Aaron Gillespie, the Vice Chair of the Republican Party for Tazewell County. He says showing up at campaign events is another way to get involved this election.

"If you want to get intimately involved with how the campaign works, locations you can volunteer at, whether it's taking tickets up or getting information from the individuals that are there so they can be contacted about the campaign. that's an excellent way to also get involved and volunteer," said Gillespie.

The Republican party and the Democratic party meet roughly once a month in Tazewell County as well.
