Ranked Choice Is False Choice - Letter | Mashpee Opinion - CapeNews.net

In November, Question 2 seeks to change our one-person, one-vote voting system to a system of ranked choice voting.

In an election with more than two candidates, voters would have the opportunity to rank candidates from their favorite to least favorite. The word “majority” would be redefined from: The winner is the candidate with one more vote than the other candidates, and changed to the winner being the candidate reaching 50 percent of the vote.

If you don’t understand it immediately, don’t vote for it.

Two years ago in Maine, a congressional candidate won the election in a three-way race by less than a point on the first count. Unfortunately, his victory did not reach the new ranked choice threshold of 50 percent. The computers kicked in and started adding in the voters’ second choice selections until the candidate with 50 percent of those total votes was determined and voila, having more votes than anyone else on the first round of voting wasn’t good enough for victory anymore.

We need to vote no on Question 2 in November and keep the Constitutional “one-person, one-vote” first choice election on Election Day protected. Ranked choice voting won’t give us more voice, it will create confusion, delay in tabulation and impose higher costs on our towns to run elections.

There’s nothing magic about 50 percent. Close elections are valid even if a candidate wins with less than 50 percent.

Vote no on Question 2—ranked choice is a false choice.
