YOUNGSTOWN — Paul Louth, associate professor of music and coordinator of Music Education in the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University published an article in the spring 2020 issue of Philosophy of Music Education Review called “Emphasis and Suggestion versus Musical Taxidermy: Neoliberal Contradictions, Music Education and the Knowledge Economy.”
The piece, published by Indiana University Press, analyzes and reviews the creeping influence of standardization in music education practices. Louth argues that standardizing methods of teaching and testing actually work against helping students learn to think for themselves in the 21st century information economy.
“I am very pleased to have the results of my most recent research published in the current issue of Philosophy of Music Education Review,” Louth said in a news release. “An earlier version of this paper was presented last year as a lecture at the Dana School of Music’s monthly Research Colloquium, which provided me with a wonderful opportunity to workshop the paper and receive feedback from faculty and graduate students before presenting it at an international symposium last summer.”
Louth also is writing a book on music education for Indiana University Press.
The article is available as a free download to YSU students and faculty through Education Full Text or Education Research Complete via the Maag Library Research Databases, and for purchase at www.jstor.org (search J. Paul Louth).
