Regarding your editorial “Wind, Fire and the Coronavirus” (June 15) on California’s emergency measures to protect communities in danger of wildfire: The California Air Resources Board (CARB), which has completed the most rigorous research on the planet to determine the carbon intensity of American energy sources, found biodiesel has the lowest score of any liquid transportation fuel it tested.
CARB data indicate that biodiesel provided over 41% of California’s total reduction of 47.1 million metric tons in climate-changing gases from fuel use, more than any other fuel, and it has reduced emissions of toxic pollutants such as those that cause smog and make it difficult for many Americans to breathe. That’s why biodiesel is featured as an American Lung Association Clean Air Choice. Reducing the pollutants from smog and dangerous cancer-causing particulate matter in fossil fuels has never been more important.
Moreover, the federal Environmental Protection Agency says that domestic biodiesel reduces carbon emissions up to 86% compared with petroleum.
California is making great strides in rolling back decades of carbon proliferation endangering our families, homes and livelihoods. I’m proud biodiesel is playing an important role in reaching zero new-carbon emissions in Californians’ not too distant future.
