Regarding Andrew Stuttaford’s May 4 review of my book “Too Small to Fail”: A good book review identifies a central thesis and assesses how the author has conveyed it. The reviewer presents evidence when passing judgment, and helps readers decide whether to read the book themselves.
My book’s thesis—that valuable lessons across society can be gained by studying small, successful nations—was ignored.
Potential readers learn nothing about Israel’s world-class “start-up” ecosystem, the solid Dutch pension funds, the Swiss debt moratorium protecting future generations, Singapore’s superior health-care system and PISA scores, or about Sweden as the best place to live and work for women. Or why the nations featured outperform across a dashboard of metrics ranging from competitiveness, CO 2 emissions, social trust, confidence in government and even happiness.
“TSTF” is about how to achieve lasting progress through a new order characterized by more markets and better government—not a tug of war between the two. Of this, again, not the slightest mention.
