I wish I could be watching the Cincinnati Reds right now. I want baseball back in the worst way.
The Reds made several signings and additions this offseason to give me hope that things were turning around.
Mike Moustakas. Nick Castellanos. Shogo Akiyama. Wade Miley. Pedro Strop. All those additions were supposed to push the Reds over the edge and into contention.
I don’t know if they are good enough to win a World Series. But it was a good start and the new guys would have fit well with what they already had.
Hopefully we get to see games soon. It will likely be between 50-60 games.
Rob Manfred is killing the game of baseball. He decimated the minor leagues. And now he is getting in the way of baseball being played. He’s a former lawyer who doesn’t seem to care if baseball gets played or not.
I side with the players in most of the professional sports negotiations. The MLB owners bought the teams with no guarantees that it would be profitable each season.
The MLB owners are billionaires. The players are millionaires. So it’s two groups of wealthy individuals fighting over money. Not a good look all the way around, but for the owners to be balking at playing a certain amount of games without fans because they won’t make any money is ridiculous.
Do you think the husband and wife in a small town that had to close down their bar, restaurant or fitness center understands what MLB owners are dealing with?
There is no way you can convince me with TV revenue what it is today, that the MLB owners would lose money in 2020. And if they do, so what. They will make up for it next year when hopefully we get back to normal.
The St. Louis Cardinals owner claimed owning a baseball franchise is not profitable. Really? You don’t have any money at all from your time as an MLB owner? Give me a break. And if you aren’t making money, then sell your team to someone who will.
Manfred can’t get out of his own way. One night, he guaranteed there will be baseball. And then a few days later, he walks it back, saying he doesn’t know if they’ll play.
Eight owners also reportedly said they didn’t care if they played at all. That’s unfortunate because the players have made it clear they want to play. They even told Manfred to tell them when and where.
I think we’ll see games soon. It will probably be a 50-60 game season and an extended postseason, which will help the owners with their revenue.
I think the owners and Manfred were dead set on this number of games from the start because they knew what the threshold they could reach and still make a profit.
There has been prep baseball and softball in Iowa the past week. It was good to get back out and cover some games after being out of action with live sports coverage since the middle of March.
I saw a radio guy on twitter put out a poll asking followers to give a grade of the fans and how they are social distancing to start the season. His three options were F or worse.
Has it been that worse to others? I don’t think it’s perfect. I hope folks didn’t think it was going to be even close to that.
But it’s been much better than I thought it would be. It is going to be hard to keep high school kids away from each other. That’s been the biggest violations to me, and I get it.
I haven’t seen many masks, but that’s not required so I won’t judge that.
I have seen many more fans in the outfield with their own chairs. The fans at PCM’s baseball game the other night were spaced out in the grass behind the field.
The softball game at Colfax-Mingo felt different, but part of that was the fact that it was crappy weather and there were likely less fans because of that. The game ended up being suspended and postponed anyway.
I think we are all doing a good job. There have been cases of COVID-19 in a few teams so far. And there will be more. I guarantee that.
Those teams have to quarantine and forfeit games for 14 days. So be safe, bring your hand sanitizer, social distance the best you can and do your part in making sure your team doesn’t have to miss games.
The season is short enough. Don’t make it even shorter because you had to sit right next to your best friend or because you just want to do what you’ve always done.
