The only mystery should be who Bryce Young thanks first and last. Saturday night’s Heisman Trophy announcement has the intrigue of a re-run you’ve watched hundreds of times.
The Alabama sophomore quarterback is going to win the most prestigious award in college athletics as the second Crimson Tide winner in as many years, after wide receiver DeVonta Smith a season ago. It’s only a matter of by how much. This is such a no-brainer that if it’s a close vote, there should be an investigation.
In his first season as a starter, Young guided Alabama to the SEC West crown and an upset of Georgia in the SEC Championship game. He has the Crimson Tide favored to repeat as national champions as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming College Football Playoff. Altogether, Young has thrown for 4,322 yards, 43 touchdowns and just four interceptions while completing 68 percent of his passes.
Perhaps most impressive is how he has performed in big spots: He rallied Alabama from 10 down in the final 8:44 of regulation to knock off Auburn. He dominated Georgia’s elite defense last Saturday, to the tune of 421 passing yards and three scores. And he picked up the defense in a 42-35 shootout victory against Arkansas.
He has lacked the margin of error of past Alabama quarterbacks, playing in more close games and suffering an early loss to Texas A&M. It has only heightened his play. When the pressure is on, Young has been at his best.
This is how I would vote:
1. QB Bryce Young, Alabama
2. QB C.J. Stroud, Ohio State
3. QB Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh
4. DE Aidan Hutchinson, Michigan
