Story revealed the choice — or lack of it — in a 'return' after the pandemic - The Boston Globe

bentangos.blogspot.com

I was surprised the Globe dedicated a front-page article to concerns about post-pandemic life and how it will affect people who have clearly had the option of working from home (”Over so soon? Dreading post-pandemic return,” Page A1, Dec. 27). Front-line workers in the medical field, first responders, those critical to the food chains, and more are probably not worried about their dog. They are more concerned about avoiding infection.

When one considers the deaths, psychological impacts, educational setbacks, and economic crisis, especially in lower-income communities and among people of color, the article is insensitive. Zoom cocktails with your friends, adopting a dog, running your kids around to activities — those are choices we make, and maybe we will all make different choices with our time in the post-pandemic era, but suffering the effects of COVID-19 is not a choice for so many. I am sure the article never intended to be viewed this way, but we all need to walk in the shoes of others.

Even in the best of circumstances, nervous about leaving the nest

Even as someone who thrives on the buzz of a bustling office, I have been predicting a shaky reentry to old-school work life for some months now. Beth Teitell’s “Over so soon? Dreading post-pandemic return” got it right. I was lucky to land a new job during the pandemic and have been working virtually since day one, in July. In my case, that means that I left a familiar (nearly 10-year) position and colleagues during the pandemic and will be returning on site to a new position and colleagues afterward. That transition alone would have been quite an adjustment under the best of circumstances. I don’t mind the heels (like them, actually) or the weight gain (under five pounds), but honestly (and unexpectedly), I am a little nervous about leaving the nest and returning to the demands of an extrovert’s life. As a COO and the person responsible for considering employee needs, my own trepidation has added a good dose of compassion about the worries others must be experiencing. That’s a good thing.
