FLINT – When it came right down to it, the colleges recruiting two-sport star Sarah Marvin of Byron didn’t have a chance against the University of Michigan.

Some genuine heavyweight schools were recruiting Marvin, a 2019 Division 3 state shot put and discus champion who last month narrowed her list of candidates to Stanford, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Michigan.

But the rest simply couldn’t match up with Michigan.

Marvin has had lifelong ties to the school – her mother Theresa was a thrower on the women’s track team – older brother T.J. is currently on the rowing team, she loved the coaches and UM’s kinesiology program is perfect for her if that’s the route she decides to go when picking a major.

“It’s just the perfect school,” Marvin said. "It was pretty much just Michigan above everybody else. It is my dream school. I always wore Michigan stuff growing up. The city is really nice, being close to home is just a huge plus.

“Going into my college decision, I knew that pretty much Michigan was the only in-state place that I was going to be looking at. It’s obviously a huge, huge, huge plus now that I am close to home my parents and family can come watch me without driving 10 hours.”

Marvin thinks working with Michigan head coach Jerry Clayton – who also oversees the throwers – will help her maximize her potential.

Clayton has produced at least one All-American in each of his seven seasons in Ann Arbor, he has coached two world champions and two Olympic medalists, and he has coached 16 individual NCAA champions.

Marvin thinks she has the potential to throw after college and believes Clayton is the right coach to help her do that.

“I haven’t been coached by him yet but I’m looking forward to it so much,” she said. "Just talking to their throwers and the other coaches on the team, literally nothing but amazing things (were said). He’s been coaching for so long and has had so much success already, some Olympians and NCAA champions.

“So obviously that’s what you want in a coach, somebody who has already coached what you’re aspiring to be. That was a huge thing.”

No high school girl in Michigan history has thrown the shot put farther than Marvin. Her throw of 51 feet, 4.75 inches in July’s Rose Invitational in New Castle, Pa., is the longest ever recorded by a Michigan high school thrower.

Her top discus mark was 150-11 at a meet in Pennsylvania.

Marvin also expects to try the hammer and weight throws at Michigan, where her early plan is to major in kinesiology.

“Michigan’s kinesiology program is one of a kind,” said Marvin, who carries a 4.02 grade-point average. “They have a brand new school of kinesiology.”

One major change next year will be throwing for a team that doesn’t also include twin sister, Becky, who was sixth in the shot put in the 2019 Division 3 state meet. Becky will throw for Tiffin University next year.

Both Marvins also play basketball for Byron, where Sarah is a two-time All-Stater who led the Eagles to a 23-1 record and district championship before last season was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sarah said it will be different not competing alongside her twin sister.

“We’re not like the stereotypical, super-connected twins but that being said, it’s going to definitely be different,” she said. “We sleep in the same room, I see her every day. But at the same time, I believe from me to her is only an hour and a half” in college.

Marvin’s mother was a record-setting thrower at Byron and her older sister, Jessica, throws at Northwood University.
