Gershwin’s Three Preludes were written for piano, and Hoyt’s arrangement lacked the snap and snarl the first prelude typically produces, at least in this performance by the CSO’s principal wind players. But once they delved into the bluesy second prelude, we could bask in William Welter’s plush oboe tone, plus warm support from Williamson’s clarinet, Stefan Ragnar Hoskuldsson’s flute, Keith Buncke’s bassoon and David Cooper’s horn. There was no swooning about, either, the musicians letting the music speak forthrightly, without faux-jazz effects. And the CSO musicians took the third prelude at quite a clip, capturing the rhythmic surge that drives so much of Gershwin’s music.
