SACRAMENTO — California will independently review the safety of any coronavirus vaccine that receives federal approval before distributing it, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.
Newsom announced the creation of an 11-member scientific review committee to check the process for any vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Members include San Francisco’s health officer, Tomás Aragón, as well epidemiology experts from UC Berkeley, Stanford University and Kaiser Permanente.
“A question I often get is: Am I going to take someone’s word for it as it relates to vaccines? Of course we don’t take anyone’s word for it,” Newsom said at a news conference. “We will do our own independently reviewed process with our world-class experts.”
President Trump for months has suggested that a coronavirus vaccine could be available by the end of the year, possibly even by the Nov. 3 election, raising concerns among infectious disease specialists that his administration may rush an unproven treatment into use.
With the politicization of a potential vaccine, Newsom said, the state must conduct “verified, independent analysis.” He said California would maintain the review committee if Democratic nominee Joe Biden is elected president.
“It doesn’t matter who the next president is. We’re going to maintain our vigilance,” Newsom said.
California’s independent scientific review is part of a distribution plan the state is developing as the country gets closer to approving a vaccine. With immunizations not expected to be widely available until 2021, Newsom said health care and essential workers, older people, residents of care facilities and incarcerated people would get priority when a vaccine is approved.
