Six years after spurning a possible $1 million payday to play baseball so he could pursue his passion for football, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes struck gold with a record-breaking 10-year contract worth as much as $503 million.

Turns out, he got baseball money and a lot more.

One day after the former two-sport star got a 10-year deal worth up to $503 million, the richest contract in American sports history, the reigning Super Bowl MVP repeatedly insisted this deal was about more than money. He wants to be the cornerstone of a dynasty in Kansas City.

"That's how I've always been built — to follow my passions and do things to the best of my ability," the Chiefs quarterback said Tuesday on a Zoom call. "It's never been about money for me. I'm glad we have this done and I can go out and be the same player that I was and the same person that I was."

The Chiefs rewarded the 24-year-old Mahomes with $477 million in guarantee mechanisms, a no-trade clause and opt-out clauses if he doesn't hit those guarantees,

But almost from the moment Kansas City traded up to select the Texas Tech star with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 draft, the front office had been mapping out a strategy to keep Mahomes.

"Going back to the first free agency I was part of in 2018, we had the idea of structuring deals with Pat in mind," general manager Brett Veach said.

"The one thing, as Pat's success kept going on, the numbers kept bigger and bigger. So it took off and that was a good challenge to have. But I remember when this first came out, (director of football administration) Brandt (Tilis) came to me said 'Pat's going to be a baseball contract, he's that good.'"

Labor: The NFL and the NFLPA haven't come to an agreement on all protocols for training camp and the preseason as the report date for teams draws closer. The two sides finalized the protocols regarding team travel, media, and treatment response, and have also updated the facilities protocol to specifically address training camp based on recommendations from a joint committee of doctors, trainers and strength coaches formed by the league and players' union. But the NFL Players Association and its president, Cleveland Browns center JC Tretter, say testing and the number of preseason games remain unresolved.

Broncos: Former head coach Mike Shanahan has been elected to the Denver Broncos Ring of Honor and will be inducted in 2021 because of COVID-19 precautions. Shanahan, a two-time Super Bowl winner in Denver, becomes the 34th member of the ring of fame and the third head coach, joining Dan Reeves (2014) and Red Miller (2017).

Browns: The Cleveland Browns have renegotiated defensive end Olivier Vernon's massive contract for next season, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Vernon's future with the Browns seemed uncertain as he was set to make $15.25 million — the largest current one-year contract on Cleveland's roster — in 2020. But the club reworked his deal and he'll earn $11 million, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is not publicly disclosing the agreement. ESPN was first to report Vernon will get a $7 million signing bonus, $3.75 million base salary, $250,000 workout bonus and $2 million in incentives.

Eagles: Wide receiver DeSean Jackson issued an apology after posting anti-Semitic images of quotations incorrectly attributed to Adolf Hitler and praising Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. The Eagles released a statement acknowledging their receiver's comments, saying they spoke with Jackson and are continuing to evaluate the circumstances and will take appropriate action. The statement and apology follow an earlier call from Philadelphia's Anti-Defamation League requesting an apology from Jackson.
