Alabamians might want to pay special attention to this year’s People’s Choice Awards. At least three nominees have ties to our state, and fan votes determine the winners.
The Montgomery native, 51, earned a nomination for Comedy Movie Star of 2021, for her role in “Thunder Force,” a superhero parody on Netflix.
Spencer, a graduate of Auburn University, already has several awards in her trophy case, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her standout role in “The Help.” The prolific actress has a long list of movie and TV credits, including roles in “The Shape of Water,” “Hidden Figures,” “The Witches,” “Green Book” and “Snowpiercer.”
Also in the running for Comedy Movie Star: Spencer’s co-star in “Thunder Force,” Melissa McCarthy; Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt; both nominated for “Jungle Cruise”; Eddie Murphy and Leslie Jones, nominated for their work in “Coming 2 America”; Ryan Reynolds, for ”Free Guy” and Salma Hayek for ”Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.”
“Thunder Force” also was nominated for Comedy Movie of 2021, competing against “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and six other films. Alabama native Sonequa Martin-Green is among the cast of “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” but she wasn’t singled out for her work in the movie.
Lee, 18, a world-class gymnast and freshman at Auburn University, received a nomination for Game Changer of 2021. Lee is a Minnesota native who became a household name at this year’s Summer Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in the all-around gymnastics competition, a silver in the team final and a bronze on the uneven bars. It was Lee’s first time as a competitor at the Olympics, which had been postponed from 2020 to 2021 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Lee’s also been competing on “Dancing with the Stars” during Season 30.
In the Game Changer category, Lee is competing against fellow gymnast Simone Biles, as well as Alex Morgan, Bubba Wallace, Carl Nassib, Naomi Osaka, Patrick Mahomes and Serena Williams.
The much-anticipated program on HBO Max was nominated for Pop Special of 2021. “Friends: The Reunion” allowed all six stars of the hit sitcom, including Alabama native Courteney Cox, to take a trip down memory lane. Basically, they got together to chat, reminisce and tell anecdotes about the series.
“Friends” was one of the highest-rated shows on TV during its 10-season run on NBC, 1994-2004. The series provided a breakthrough role for Cox, who was born and raised in Birmingham, and cemented her fame as an actress. Her character, Monica Geller, was a neat-freak chef who could be bossy, obsessive, anxious, wacky, kind and caring -- sometimes all at once.
Other nominees for Pop Special of 2021 are “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, “Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil,” “Justin Bieber: Our World,” “Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg,” “Oprah with Meghan and Harry,” “Pink: All I Know So Far’ and “Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3.”

Fans can vote online for their favorites through Nov. 17. Votes also may be cast on Twitter, with a public tweet or retweet that includes one category hashtag and one corresponding nominee hashtag. See the full list of voting rules here.
Winners will be announced on Dec. 7 during a ceremony held at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The “People’s Choice Awards” show is set to air on NBC and E!, starting at 8 p.m. CT.
