F ollowing backlash on a social media, Tripadvisor has kicked off a reviewer who wrote of visiting the Auschwitz Museum to “test the chamber” and said that it was “fun for the family.” The review has also been removed.
The museum is located on the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland, where more than one million people were killed by the Nazis during World War II. The vast majority of the 960,000 Jews killed there were brought to gas chambers upon arrival.
When the museum initially reported the offensive review to Tripadvisor and asked for it to be taken down, the reply was unexpected. “We have completed our investigation into your concern and have also evaluated all other aspects of the review in question,” was the travel site’s response. “The review complies with our submission guidelines and will remain published on Tripadvisor.”
The Auschwitz Museum then took its case to the modern-day public square. “We have reported this review of the @AuschwitzMuseum posted on @TripAdvisor,” complained the museum on Twitter. “According the company, it complies with their submission guidelines.”
The public outcry was swift, with comments including “That’s horrific!” and “Not a good look, Tripadvisor.” One commenter asked, “Seriously is @TripAdvisor using robots to check reviews?”
The same day, Tripadvisor reversed its decision, removing both the offensive review and reviewer.
“At Tripadvisor, we abhor any kind of discrimination,” the company said in a statement via email. “Our content posting guidelines state that Tripadvisor does not allow content that promotes intolerance for individuals or groups of people based on their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or nationality.”
The episode serves as a cautionary tale for digital platforms that rely heavily on robots to vet reviews and comments. “Tripadvisor utilizes a blend of technology and people to ensure the content on our site is trustworthy,” said the statement, which noted that the site blocks millions of reviews that do not meet its guidelines, as well as removing posted reviews following a series of checks.
“In this case, our initial screening failed to identify this review as promoting intolerance,” continued the statement. “Through our escalation process, this review was removed. We always aim to get it right the first time and we apologize to the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum, the Jewish community at-large, and all communities and individuals affected by this initial miss. Additionally, due to the nature of this review, we have banned this user from contributing further on our platform.”
“Thank you @TripAdvisor for removing the review,” tweeted the Auschwitz Museum.
The Auschwitz Museum did not respond to a request for comment.
