More than 190 million adults in the United States require vision correction, and for many of those folks, eyeglasses are a necessity.
But glasses can also be an extension of personal style, at least that’s what online eyeglass retailer BonLook is counting on.
Canada-based BonLook is known for producing their own line of fashion-forward styles, and they focus their site experience around helping customers find the right fit and style for their face shape.
BonLook’s frames are created by an in-house design team in Montreal, and they also collaborate with style-savvy influencers on some of their select styles. Read on for more about BonLook, from their ordering process to their reputation.
BonLook offers a full range of eyeglass frame styles for adults. Their frame shapes include aviator, cat eye, round, square, and rectangle styles, which come in a wide range of colors. They also offer five different frame materials, including acetate, metal, stainless steel, titanium, and mixed material.
They have a wide range of lens treatments to suit most customer eye correction needs, including 1.67 high index lenses for those with prescriptions stronger than +/- 4.00. They also offer blue-light-filtering lenses to reduce eye fatigue.
All of their frames can be turned into sunglasses by selecting the tint preference. An additional sunglass treatment includes a photochromic lens treatment in which the lenses darken when activated by ultraviolet (UV) rays and changes in temperature.
Most of their frames run from around $100 to $150, but depending on your prescription, you may need to pay more. For example, blue-light-filtering lenses cost an additional $50, and people with stronger prescriptions may need 1.67 high index lenses, which cost an extra $30.
For sunglasses, a tint without a prescription is free, but it’s an additional $20 with a prescription. The photochromic lens treatment costs $100 to $200, and the polarized lens treatment costs $100.
Shipping on orders over $80 is free within the continental United States and Canada. For international shipping, it’s a $35 flat fee.
Does BonLook take insurance?
No, BonLook doesn’t accept insurance.
If you have vision insurance, check to see if you can submit a receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement.
If you’re a serious fashionista, start by looking at the Collaborations tab of the BonLook website. There, you can browse for styles designed in collaboration with Canadian journalist and women’s rights advocate Liz Plank and NHL All-Star Taylor Hall.
If you want to jump right in, go to the Shop tab and filter by size, gender, shape, color, material, and nose bridge. Once you find a frame you like, you can use the virtual try-on tool to see how it looks. Click the virtual try-on button from below the main product picture, and choose to activate your webcam or upload a passport-style picture of yourself.
Before ordering, you’ll need your prescription from your eye doctor and your pupillary distance. Make sure your prescription is up to date.
Once you’ve settled on your choice of frame, you’ll select either eyeglasses or sunglasses, your size, and your vision type (single vision, reading, without RX, or multifocal). Then, BonLook will ask if you have a low, medium, or strong prescription. This will determine whether you need high index lenses, or thinner, lighter lenses.
You’ll have to sign up to complete your order, which will include uploading a copy of your prescription.
For single vision prescription or nonprescription glasses, orders placed from within the continental United States are estimated to take 8 to 12 days. For progressive or high index lenses, customers in the United States can expect to wait 8 to 14 days.
Note that expedited shipping takes 3 days for prescription or nonprescription glasses and 5 days for progressive or high index lenses.
BonLook accepts returns for online orders up to 60 days after the receipt of your order, with free return shipping if returned from the United States within 30 days.
To initiate, navigate to the My Account section of your BonLook account, click on My Orders, then Details. Find the option that says, “Click here to file a return request.” Fill out and submit the form. You can also contact the customer service team to start a return.
Note that merchandise purchased on sale will only be issued store credit up to 60 days after the receipt of the order.
BonLook’s Trustpilot rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars with more than 120 reviews provides a good representation of the company’s reputation among consumers.
Positive customer reviews praise BonLook’s excellent customer service and affordability. Many feel the frame design and material quality are high. Negative customer reviews are mostly unhappy with the selection of styles and the return policy.
In 2021, BonLook acquired the virtual optical measurement tool EyeMeasure. According to BonLook, the acquisition is part of its growth plan to provide a suite of innovative tools to make ordering online easier.
BonLook is certainly not the only game in town. If it’s style you’re after, Warby Parker and Eyeconic both offer designer eyeglass frames at similarly competitive prices. But if you’re looking to reduce costs, no-frills Zenni Optical offers eyeglasses for as little as $6.95.
When it comes to price, BonLook is in the middle of the road, compared with other online eyeglass retailers. But the company’s selections are certainly cheaper than most brick-and-mortar shops with designer brands.
BonLook has a fair amount of credit when it comes to style. So if you’re thinking of going the designer route on your next pair of specs, but don’t want the high price tag, BonLook could be a great option. That’s good, no?
