Housing project needs comprehensive review | Letter to the editor - Port Townsend Leader

I am writing to express concern regarding a proposed development (MLA 19-00142) to site 48 houses around the Discovery Bay Golf Course.

This area is currently a very quiet, rural area with housing and development appropriately spaced. The proposed development would interrupt important wildlife habitat and corridors that connect to neighboring habitat along Discovery Road, in the preserved woodland at Bayview Chevy Chase both abutting the golf course and on the west side of Cape George Road, as well as the wooded areas to the north.

However, no environmental impact statement has been required. The determination also provides no requirement for covenants, conditions, and restrictions and is therefore nonspecific about what rules or principles would be in place to avoid environmental impacts.

The Jefferson County Department of Community Development failed to hold any public meetings during the environmental process that led to their determination.

There was only one opportunity for comment on Feb. 5.

This process should involve the department, our community, other concerned parties including state and local agencies, tribes and the development proponent to reasonably assess and resolve concerns to achieve a successful, final county environmental determination on the future development of the golf course and adjacent lands.

The final outcome of this process will have lasting environmental impacts that affect existing and future citizens within our community in the eastern Discovery Bay and outlying county area.
