With Spring Training only days away, it’s time to finish up the 2020 San Francisco Giants season reviews. Next up is right-handed catcher Chadwick Tromp.
Season stats
24 games, 64 plate appearances, .213/.219/.426, .645 OPS, 4 home runs, 10 RBI, 1 walk to 20 strikeouts
73 OPS+, 65 wRC+, -0.1 rWAR, 0.0 fWAR
Status throughout the season
Tromp was left off the Opening Day roster as he was dealing with a minor injury, but he was recalled on July 28. He stayed on the roster until Sept. 22, when he was placed on the Injured List just a few days before the season concluded.
Season review
Tromp was exciting, and that’s not something that’s a given at the catcher’s spot. He was also the team’s best offensive catcher by OPS, which is not what anyone was hoping for given the arrival of Joey Bart.
It was a bit of a hit or miss season for Tromp, both literally and figuratively. He flashed a lot of power, with 4 home runs in just 64 plate appearances — 4 more than the other Giants catchers combined for in their 164 plate appearances.
And they had some mustard on them!
Again, not a thing anyone was hoping for. No one entered the 2020 season hoping that 100% of the Giants catcher home runs would come from Tromp, but that’s certainly not his problem.
But while Tromp gave the Giants their only doses of power from the backstop position, he also had only one walk compared with 20 strikeouts. We all know what Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris value in hitters, and it’s neither a 1.6% walk rate nor a 31.3% strikeout rate.
Still and all, Tromp provided totally passable offense for a backup at the position, while playing solid enough defense. It was pretty clear that the Giants were decently high on him, from how they treated him before, during, and after the season.
He held down the fort and was fun to watch and easy to root for. I’ll take it.
Role in 2021
Tromp was non-tendered after the season, but immediately re-signed, surprisingly to a Major League deal.
With the signing of Curt Casali, and the return of Buster Posey, it seems like Tromp’s role will be to hang out in the Minors, and be the Giants third option if something happens to Casali or Posey, so that Bart can keep developing instead of getting an emergency call up.
Grade
Definitely a passing grade.
