A growing number of private schools are registered; including La Crosse's First Lutheran
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- Parents have more choices than ever when deciding where to send their kids to school. A growing number of private schools have registered for Wisconsin’s school choice program.
There is little debate over the value of education, but where our kids go to school and who picks up the costs can divide a community. La Crosse’s First Lutheran has joined the growing list of schools enrolled in the Wisconsin private schools choice programs. Commonly called the voucher program, eligible students can attend a participating private school. In return, the private school receives a state aid payment for each eligible student.
First Lutheran program chair, John Byus, say the program gives parents a choice, and more access to a education that works for their families. “You really do have one shot to educate your child, as a parent, especially as they move higher in the grades. You really want to make sure you are choosing the right school for your family.”, explains Byus.
Critics argue school choice can hurt local communities. President of the La Crosse Education Association, John Havlicek, is also an advocate for choice, but not when he says the choice of one family impacts many others. “Diverting tax dollars and funding to a private option is problematic. There is less staffing. There are less resources for materials, for programs, for what those families and those kids need, and yet they have no other place to get them.”, says Havlicek.
Under Wisconsin state law, no more than 6% of students from one public school district may participate in the school choice program. There are two exceptions. There are no limits for students in Milwaukee and Racine. “There are people in the Legislature that have set this program up for the state of Wisconsin. As long as we are able to be a part of it, and be a blessing for those families, that’s what we are going to do.”, says Byus.
Enrollment is underway now through April 15th, giving parents and educators time for research and debate.
307 private schools and school systems are registered for 2021-22 Wisconsin parental choice program, an increase of 27 from the previous school year.
