Back in late January, Vice President Mike Pence attended a school choice event at the state Capitol in Madison, where he shook the hand of Sarah Hughes and posed for a photo with her 8-year-old son Jack.
Hughes was so taken by the vice president, she wrote him a letter to voice her support for school choice and to tell him of the strides her son was making at Lighthouse Christian School in Madison.
So, when the vice president's office called a few weeks ago to ask if the family would appear in a video at the Republican National Convention, Hughes left the decision up to her son.
"My son said, 'We don't turn down the vice president, mom,' " Hughes told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The video played Tuesday night as the convention focused on the theme "Land of Opportunity." The Hugheses and others joined Pence at the Abraham Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Indiana.
For Hughes and her son, the opportunity they embraced was school choice.
A single mother who works three jobs, Hughes said she applied for the school choice voucher program two years in a row but was waitlisted. In July 2019, her son was accepted in the program.
She sold her condo in Cross Plains so that she and her son could move into Madison to be closer to Lighthouse Christian, where she said an individualized program has helped her son succeed.
Jack, who wants to be an engineer when he grows up, has ADHD and dyslexia.
In the video, Hughes said her son would have "slipped through the cracks in public schools," adding that "having the option to go to a school that fits him has been a real game-changer for us."
"I know that because of that opportunity that he’s going to succeed and he’s going to achieve that goal of being an apparatus engineer if that’s what he chooses to stick with," she said.
They enjoyed their experience with Pence.
"My son got to explore the Lincoln childhood home, which he absolutely loved," she said. "We walked around, got to mingle with the vice president and met with the others" in the video.
