The attraction of playing college football in the SEC is enticing.

Crowds of 100,000-plus and millions more on television watch as SEC players compete against the best in the nation on a weekly basis with year-round exposure.

The allure and limelight attract top recruits as member schools routinely rank among the top programs.

Fairfield's Malachi Bennett had football offers from some of the most prestigious programs in the nation and narrowed his list to Georgia, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Louisville and UAB.

Bennett chose UAB.

"I really like the coaching staff and want to stay home," Bennett said of his choice. "I'll get to play there and I can get to the NFL from there."

Bennett made his decision — he narrowed the choice to Ole Miss and UAB — after Wednesday football practice.

He immediately told UAB coach Bill Clark.

“Oh yeah,” Bennett said, laughing. “He was very excited.”

A 4-star recruit, Bennett was selected to the ASWA Class 5A all-state football team and also helped Fairfield win the state championship in basketball. He caught 44 passes for 808 yards and nine touchdowns while adding three interceptions in football and averaged 11.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game in basketball.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior receiver is No. 11 on 247Sports Class of 2021 list of state players and was listed among AL.com’s top uncommitted players in the state.
