Local Black women excited about Harris as Biden’s VP pick

DAYTONA TIMES

On Tuesday, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and former vice president Joe Biden announced his running mate.

Biden chose Senator Kamala Harris of California. Harris is a former attorney general of California and former district attorney of San Francisco.

She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., also known as AKA.

AKAs are proud

In the Daytona Beach area, her local sorority sisters are weighing on in on Harris’ nomination.

Jennifer Thomas is the former local AKA chapter president and a retired city clerk for Daytona Beach.

“I think it’s a great choice. She was the best choice from the things that I’ve heard,” Thomas told the Daytona Times on Wednesday.

“I think she has the experience in a candidate for president. She has experience being in Congress and knowing how government works. She also ran some successful campaigns herself.”

Tangela Boyd is also a member of AKA and a public relations and marketing consultant.

“As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, I am very proud and ecstatic about her nomination,” Boyd said. “As a Black woman, it means a lot to me because it shows that our possibilities really are endless.”

Historic moment

Daytona Beach Commissioner Paula Reed, president of the Daytona Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., agrees with Thomas and Boyd and thinks Harris is a great choice.

“I do believe of all the candidates that Harris was one of the best qualified for the position. Michelle Obama got us in the house; Kamala gets us a seat at the table.”

Harris will be the first Black woman and first woman of Asian ethnicity to be a vice presidential candidate for a major political party. Harris’ mother is an Indian immigrant; her father is an immigrant of Jamaica.

The pick wasn’t a great surprise as Biden has said that he was seeking a woman of color as his running mate.

‘Long overdue’

It’s also an historic move in a nation that has had a history of bad race relations and mistreatment toward minorities and women.

Voters will hit the polls in the general election on Nov. 3 to choose between Biden-Harris or incumbent Republican President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

The choice of Harris, who also is a Howard University graduate, embodies a lot of excitement, hope and promise for many, including African Americans, especially women, teens and girls.

Linda McGhee is a retired city of Daytona Beach recreation leader and chairs the Juneteenth Festival Committee and the local Muslim Women’s Association.

“I think it’s outstanding and long overdue. Black women long before slavery have been doing great things all throughout the world,” McGhee told the Times.

“Powerful, what she is doing, Black women throughout the centuries have been being. Her being chosen just shows her skills, talent, background, and leadership. I’m proud of her. I think she’ll do well as vice president and president.”
