COLUMBIA — Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield and Louisiana head coach Billy Napier each publicly declared their intentions to stay where they are Saturday, leaving Oklahoma assistant head coach Shane Beamer as the favorite to get South Carolina's open head coaching job, sources told The Post and Courier.
University sources have confirmed that Beamer is expected to be flown to Columbia early Sunday. Other sources with knowledge have confirmed that Beamer is the choice.
Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell and Florida offensive coordinator Brian Johnson are the other finalists that have been interviewed.
Beamer, a South Carolina assistant coach under Steve Spurrier from 2007-10, has received massive support from former Gamecocks and others connected with the football program.
Born in Charleston, Beamer, 43, has never been a head coach nor an offensive/defensive coordinator but has learned under several Hall-of-Fame coaches during his career. He played and coached under his father, legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, and has also worked for Phillip Fulmer at Tennessee and Steve Spurrier at USC. Beamer worked for Georgia coach Kirby Smart and is currently under Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley.
Chadwell was the first interview of the process and led Coastal to a 10-0 record on Saturday night with a thrilling, nationally televised win over No. 8 BYU. Johnson has also never worked as a head coach but was impressive in the interview process.
Athletics director Ray Tanner and USC President Bob Caslen are expected to meet within the next 24 hours to finalize their choice and present it to USC’s Board of Trustees. A formal announcement could come by Monday.
